One route: series

Two 1000-ohm resistors in series give the current one path. Their resistances add to 2000 ohms.

1000 + 1000 = 2000 Ω

Two routes: parallel

Two equal 1000-ohm resistors in parallel give two paths between the same nodes. The total is 500 ohms.

1000 Ω ∥ 1000 Ω = 500 Ω

What stays the same?

Series components share the same current. Parallel branches share the same voltage across their endpoints.

Series: current · parallel: voltage

Draw the nodes

The electrical connections matter more than the shape of the drawing. Trace which terminals share a node.
