Start with a model

Imagine 100 cells growing by 10 percent each hour in a simplified mathematical model.

100 cells

One step

After one hour, multiply 100 by 1.1. The new total is 110 cells.

100 × 1.1 = 110

The base changes

Next hour, the 10 percent applies to 110. Add 11, not 10. The total becomes 121.

110 × 1.1 = 121

Repeat the multiplier

After n steps, the model gives 100 times 1.1 to the power n. Real biological growth has limits.

100 × 1.1ⁿ
